About the Host


The official World Tourism Day 2013 celebrations will be hosted by the Maldives.

Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives consists of ninety-nine percent of sea. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands out of which only 200 are inhabited and another 105 islands developed as tourist resorts.

Tourists have been coming to this island nation since the early 1970s. Since then the Maldivian tourism industry has blossomed and developed into the backbone of the national economy, accounting for almost 30% of GDP.
