WORLD TOURISM DAY 2016 CELEBRATION IN THE ISLAND OF MAURITIUS

The World Tourism Day 2016 was celebrated in Mauritius, under the coordinatorship of Dr Vanessa Gowreesunkar, Lecturer at the Business Education Department of the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE). Mauritius is a popular sea-sun-sand tourism destination in the Indian Ocean and the MIE is a Governmental body catering for the education sector in Mauritius (mie.ac.mu). To commemorate this special day, eminent resource persons from the Mauritian tourism industry were invited to deliver few talks based on the theme "Tourism for All - Promoting Universal Accessibility". The objective was to sensitise students on emerging global challenges of the tourism industry and to engage them in a debate regarding issues affecting accessibility of tourism in Mauritius. Dr Vikash Tatayah, Conservation Director at the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, Mr Maga Ramasamy, Manager for Corporate Sustainability and Social Responsibility at the Air Mauritius and Mr Ajay Jhurry, President of the Association of Tourist operators were well applauded for their enriching presentations. The target audience was Travel and Tourism students of the Mauritius Institute of Education and the Mauritius College. The celebration of the World Tourism Day was also marked by a presentation from the TDS 2016-2018 students of the MIE and the conferring of Tourism Awards. On that occasion, Travel and Tourism students of the Mauritius College were rewarded for their outstanding performance in Travel and Tourism subjects - Cambridge School Certificate Examination 2015. The World Tourism Day 2016 celebration in Mauritius goes in line with the Ministry of Education vision of "a quality education for all ...... to transform Mauritius into an intelligent nation state in the vanguard of global progress and innovation".
